Concept to completion: 5 1/2 weeks
The client required a modern and contemporary style garden to complement their house. The design was to incorporate a hot tub with a pergola surround, which the customer had already purchased. A drawing was created consisting of a large patio area in grey porcelain paving with a section of the paving laid over concrete. This area was for the hot tub/pergola. Gravel and planting areas edged with setts and a large lawn were also included in the design. The contemporary style was to be achieved through the colours and type of materials and the clean, straight lines with square corners/edges.
Full excavation of the patio area was required, including the laying of a steel wire armoured cable beneath the foundations to provide power to the hot tub area. The porcelain paving was laid on a mortar bed, using a priming slurry on the paving underside to ensure the best adhesion. Edging setts were laid using a stringline point to point to establish perfect straight lines and consistent heights. The lawn was prepared with topsoil spread across the area to the desired level, the turf was then laid on the prepared area.
Finishing touches included infilling planting areas with gravel, the customer chose flamingo gravel, a mix of peach, pink and white with blue and grey angular pieces. These choices deepen in tone when wet, which is ideal to complement the grey porcelain paving. Planting consisted of mainly grasses to harmonise with the contemporary design and provide a calming presence. Outdoor lighting was installed to highlight the planting areas and create a relaxing ambience around the patio.
