Extravagant Family Garden

Heighington Village, Newton Aycliffe

Concept to completion: 9 Weeks

Planning

With a vision of designing an extravagant family garden, this garden includes multiple tiers and different areas, each with their own unique feel. The graphite porcelain and grey edges perfectly compliment the black limestone walling, together these dark tones generate a modern theme to match the new-build house. The front garden also received a makeover to the same colour theme which has certainly enhanced the kerb appeal and created a striking entrance to the home.

Progress

Due to this project focusing on a large area, a laser level was used to ensure heights were level for all the paving areas and wall foundations. The desired finish heights were set using stakes (taking water fall into consideration) so that when our landscapers began excavating, they could use the stakes to gage how deep to dig and infill the dolomite foundation stone. Best practice paving methods were used at all times, including a full mortar bed coverage to the slurry coated slab. The black limestone walling was laid on a concrete foundation with concrete blocks laid behind to give extra structural strength. For this, a mortar mix that contains black sand was used to give a darker coloured joint that blends effectively with the black walling stone.

Completion

A planting scheme was drawn up by our horticultural expert to bring more life to the garden, topiary lollipops were placed either side of the main steps to add a wow factor but our personal favourite was the Trachycarpus fortunei which adds a holiday vibe to the garden especially situated next to the client’s sun loungers. An eye-catching blend of black, grey and bluey white non-porous gravel which will stay free of green slime/moss was chosen. To complete the garden a large stainless-steel sphere water feature with duck egg cobble surround adds a crisp, modern edge.
