Entertaining Paradise

Stokesley

Concept to completion: 5 Weeks

Planning

The client’s garden was in much need of an update to harmoniously blend with their ultra-modern, white rendered house. They wished for a contemporary stylish outdoor space to entertain friends.

The first priority to address was the boundaries, the majority of the fences had seen better days and would need to be replaced. After discussing several options, the customers chose a forest Europa fence panel (a more contemporary alternative to standard horizontal board panels) yet sustainable and sturdy. The rear fence was covered in black geotextile membrane to prevent weeds creeping through from the neighbour’s garden before being clad with contemporary horizontal boards.

A drawing was created with a light grey and riven porcelain paving designed to reflect a natural stone finish. To support the client’s request of easy maintenance we opted for an artificial turf for this project and all planting areas were to be covered in a geotextile membrane before being gravelled ensuring effortless enjoyment for many years to come. Another necessity was a section to the side of the house that was fully fenced and gated for the client’s dogs.

Progress

Foundations were excavated, prepared, and concrete block walls and steps built to retain the two levels. These were clad with the same grey porcelain paving as the patio to keep with the contemporary theme. The patio on the top level was edged with setts, as was the area to contain the artificial turf. The foundations were compacted, sharp sand screed to make it as smooth as possible then the artificial turf was laid and the edges nailed into concrete. Two drainage channels were required on the lower patio for the discreet removal of surface water.

Completion

To complete the garden the clients chose a darker gravel to contrast with the paving, the planting plan was then implemented consisting of a large range of plants; several perennials, annuals, trees and specimens including a magnificent Trachycarpus fortunei planted near the higher-level patio. The garden was brought together with the customers stylish black outdoor furniture, a perfect contrast to the light grey paving.
