Shrubs

Shrubs

Generally characterised as possessing multiple stems with no main trunk, shrubs can be deciduous or evergreen. Shrubs are the backbone of a garden, used as screens, backgrounds and accents. Shrubs form the framework of a garden and, if selected carefully, can provide interest throughout the year due to the huge variety of colours and sizes; flowering shrubs particularly. Small shrubs often have a compact habit, making them ideal to grow in patio containers.

We offer an enormous range of shrubs, both deciduous and evergreen including Azalea, Choisya, Euonymus, Hebe and Lavandula.

Shrub Considerations &. Maintenance

Shrubs vary substantially in shape and size. Before choosing a shrub it’s important to understand your garden, you must be aware of the soil texture and acidity so you can choose a shrub that will thrive in your garden. Consider the number of hours of sunshine the position where you want to plant the shrub receives throughout the seasons. Also, think about the ultimate height and spread of the shrub, as well as growth rate.

Newly planted shrubs need careful watering, however, once established they need little water. To keep shrubs healthy, productive and to restrict their size, spring is a good time to prune before the shrub leafs out. Wait to prune flowering shrubs such as lilacs after they bloom, pruning after flowering encourages shrubs to bush out and produce another round of blooms.
